Living In A Downtown Daydream: 2013 Winterfest

By: Catrina Leone: Intern

Tis’ the season! It’s the time of year to be with family, friends and loved ones. The time of year to overeat and over-spend. The time of year that brings people together. That is exactly what happened this past Saturday, November 30th at the Cleveland Winterfest! TV20’s own Leah Haslage was there to cover this wonderful event, and although it might have been cold, the turn out was great!

Every year, thousands of area residents make their way to Downtown Cleveland for the Winterfest. To engage in traditions both old and new, such as: horse-drawn carriage rides through the streets of Downtown, to the old-fashioned model trains in the basement of the stunning Cleveland Public Library. Needless to say, there were many activities for families to engage in the Holiday spirit. With the help of IBEW Local 38 and Cleveland Public Power, the thousands of strings of LED lights illuminated Public Square and the official holiday tree for the season.

Just a peak of the beautiful Downtown display!

The beautiful lights became the backdrop as a highly contagious holiday spirit overtakes the city’s urban core. The best time to see the wonderful display, would of course be at night, when the multitude of colors light up the sky and the city. There were many events for families to participate in at Winterfest. Tower City had events which included Kringle’s Inventionasium and Kringle’s QuickSnap, Bruce the Talking Spruce, Holiday Express Train Ride, and The Toy Soldier, Fairy Godmother Holiday Show. Tower City was lit up a bit differently this year, with a leg-lamp lighting show to honor the 30th Anniversary of a Christmas Story.

The Winterfest is not the only event to bring people together this Holiday season. The Winter Lights Lantern Festival, held at the Cleveland Museum of Art is on that list. It goes from December  through late December and TV20 will be there for all the festivities! In keeping with the theme of A Christmas Story, “A Christmas Story” Run! took place Saturday December 7th, with a 5K and 10K run which at 9:00am. The Leg Lamp Fun Run began shortly after, at 10:30am. The race started at Public Square and went by movie set locations. Another great event to get people into the Holiday cheer, was the Holiday CircleFest. This was held on December 8th, had an amazing turn out and was loads of fun! December is a month of fun here in Cleveland! Keep watching TV20, as I mentioned earlier we will be airing these wonderful events that take place this year in our Special Christmas Program during the Weekly-News-Wrap-Up throughout the Holiday Season, stay tuned!
