Happy December! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend and filled up on Turkey, stuffing, and lots of pie!. Speaking of giving, it is the time of year to give to others around us. The Ronald McDonald House unveiled a new expansion to help people in our community. It is the home away from home, for children being treated for serious illnesses at area hospitals. Having to turn people away due to lack of space was tough; the waiting list was up to 40 families.

The new wing adds up to an additional 20,000 square feet, including 18 new guest rooms. Once winter comes and goes, residents will be able to enjoy RMH”s gardens, a new koi pond and a brand new playground. The “Playful Paradise” children’s space is the standout room at RMH. The playroom features faux trees with branches that stretch across the ceiling, a tree with a hollow trunk for puppet shows, colorful magnet flowers that can be moved, a mushroom-shaped table with log stools, a bright red club house partitioned with faux logs, and much more.

In 2012, RMH launched a $13.5 million capital campaign goal for the renovation and expansion. So far about $12 million has been raised. RMH is currently looking for volunteers for this amazing, wonderful cause. I wrote the story about how the Ronald McDonald House is striving to make a difference. Stay tuned to TV20, as this story will air at 7:00am, 12:00pm and 6:00pm in the Weekly News Wrap-up. It is never too late to get involved with RMH, and make a difference, Happy Holiday’s!
