MAYOR’S NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME
Mayor Frank Jackson’s 32nd Annual “Night Out Against Crime” was an opportunity for Clevelanders to come together as One Cleveland and help strengthen their communities. The event itself has taken place in each of the city’s four police districts with the main event being recently held at historic League Park. One of the main highlights was an exhibition baseball game played between Cleveland Police Officers and youth from the city, with strong support from the Cleveland Indians. Mayor Jackson also presented a proclamation declaring August “Play Ball Month”.
WASTE REDUCTION CHALLENGE
The City of Cleveland Waste Reduction Challenge recently kicked-off at City Hall Rotunda. Ten participating teams are in the running for the grand prize, which includes a catered lunch with Mayor Jackson. Each team will fight to complete from over fifty simple acts to help reduce waste and continue to keep Cleveland a sustainable city.
NEW DAY IN HOUGH
The Annual New Day in Hough Celebration recently took place at Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center. We talked to Ward 7 Councilman T.J. Dow about the all-day festival.
PRE 4 CLE GRANT
The City of Cleveland’s preschool expansion initiative Pre 4 Cle, recently awarded preschool expansion grants to help increase the number of high-quality preschool openings in the Union-Miles, Buckeye-Shaker and Glenville neighborhoods. The grants awarded went to council for economic opportunities in Greater Cleveland, which will open two new classrooms at the Oakwood Child Development Center in Union Miles…the centers, which will open a new classroom at the Citizen’s Academy in Glenville…and Fundamentals Early Childhood Development Academy, which will open a new site at the Buckeye-Shaker Fundamentals Academy.
YOUTH SUMMER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
Mayor Frank Jackson congratulated hundreds of Cleveland’s youth that were involved in the 10th Annual Youth Summer Employment Program. The students, ages fourteen to eighteen, had a chance to learn the importance of hard work and skills that they will take as they enter the workforce.
MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION
The Cleveland Division of Fire recently helped grant a wish for a special young boy who one day hopes to be a firefighter.
ARMY OF BELIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON
Formed in 2007, the Army of Believers Scholarship Fund has played a key role in both improving and increasing the educational opportunities for CMSD graduates to make a smooth transition from high school to college. A luncheon is held annually to honor the young men and woman who have received these scholarships and to commemorate them for all of their hard work. The 8th Annual Celebration also saluted the most influential group supporters, the Army of Believers “Five Star Generals” for their outstanding support.
HOPKINS AIRPORT RECOGNITION
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport just moved up in the ranks. According to cheapflights.com Annual Airport affordability report Hopkins went from 66th on the list up to 8th place this year. The average airfare from CLE, according to the report, is $278.
CELEBRATING RECOVERY 5K
The Celebrating Recovery 5k Run and 1 Mile walk is taking place on September 5th at Edgewater Park. The event is free, but a $10 donation is appreciated. To register, make a donation and for more information, visit hermescleveland.com
TRAFFIC ALERT
The street pavement repair project for West 117th is officially underway from the East side of West 117th from Lorain Avenue to Lake Avenue. One Westbound and one Southbound lane of traffic will be maintained on the West side of the roadway during the project. This will impact your drive so please give yourself plenty of time and be aware of detours and additional road closures. The project is scheduled for completion by November.

47th ANNUAL PUERTO RICAN PARADE
The 47th Annual Puerto Rican Parade and Festival was recently held and started at East 13th street and ended at the Muni Lot. Thousands of men and woman from in and around the community gathered together for a day full of rich culture and history, local vendors, food and much more. Groups and organizations from the Greater Cleveland area participated including the Cleveland Division of Police. The Honorable Mayor Frank Jackson was also on hand at the event to present a special proclamation.
